Can evening exercise protect your memory when you sleep less?

Yes, at least in this lab trial. Young adults who cycled for 30 minutes in the evening and then got only 4.5 hours of sleep remembered new information as well as people given 8.5 hours of sleep. Short sleepers who rested instead of exercising scored significantly worse than the exercisers.

Losing sleep hurts thinking, and memory is especially vulnerable. The part of the brain that files away new facts, the hippocampus, is highly sensitive to short sleep. The problem is that there are few proven ways to soften that damage in people. Earlier research shows that exercise increases slow-wave sleep, the deepest stage of sleep, and improves memory. That raised a practical question for anyone facing a short night: can a single workout make up for some of the lost sleep, and does deep sleep explain how?

How the study was done

Researchers in Montreal randomly assigned 88 healthy young adults to one of four groups. The average age was 24, and 52% were women. Two groups had an 8.5-hour sleep opportunity and two had only 4.5 hours. Within each pair, one group did 30 minutes of moderate cycling at 7:00 p.m., at about 55 to 60 percent of their maximum aerobic capacity. The other group sat and rested instead.

At 10:00 p.m., everyone learned 80 face and name pairs. Their sleep was recorded overnight with polysomnography, a lab test that tracks brain waves to measure each sleep stage. After sleep, they were shown 120 face and name pairs: the 80 they had studied plus 40 new ones. The main score measured how well each person could tell the studied pairs apart from the new ones.

What the data show

Exercise and sleep length worked together in a way that mattered. Exercise changed memory scores differently depending on how much people slept, and this combined effect was statistically significant (p = 0.033). That means a pattern this strong would show up by chance only about 3 times in 100 if there were no real effect. The size of that effect was modest.

The key comparison was among the short sleepers. People who exercised before their 4.5-hour night scored significantly higher on delayed recall than people who rested before the same short night (p = 0.028, under a 3 in 100 chance of coincidence). Their scores were also comparable to both groups that got 8.5 hours of sleep, with no significant difference.

Deep sleep helps explain why. The share of the night spent in slow-wave sleep statistically accounted for the link between exercise and better recall. The researchers tested this with a method that gives a range of likely values, and that range stayed entirely above zero (95% bootstrap confidence interval 0.073 to 0.924). In plain terms, deep sleep is very likely part of the pathway, not just a bystander.

This result fits with earlier work showing that exercise boosts deep sleep and memory. Here, a moderate workout a few hours before bed appears to have helped the brain make better use of the sleep it did get.

This is not a license to skimp on sleep. The volunteers were healthy people in their mid-20s, tested in a lab on one specific memory task: matching faces to names. “Comparable” to full sleepers means the difference was not statistically significant, which is not the same as proving the scores were identical. The authors themselves describe exercise as “associated with” offsetting the memory loss. And this was a single session of exercise followed by one round of testing. We do not know whether the benefit holds night after night for someone who is chronically short on sleep, or whether it applies to older adults.

Still, the practical appeal is real. Plenty of people know in advance that a short night is coming: an early flight, a night shift, a newborn. A half hour on a bike is cheap and now has some evidence behind it for protecting memory on those nights.
