Editorial Standards

Health information is a matter of trust, and I treat it that way. This page sets out how the site works: what I cover, where the numbers come from, who reviews them, what happens when I get something wrong, and who pays for it. If anything here does not match what you see on a page, tell me and I will fix it.

How I choose stories

I cover a study or a health story when it has the potential to change a decision someone actually makes. In practice that means new peer-reviewed research, regulatory decisions, outbreaks and recalls, and claims that are spreading faster than the evidence behind them.

I do not cover something because it is popular. I skip stories where the underlying evidence is too thin to say anything useful, and I say so when a finding is preliminary, contested, or drawn from a study too small to support the headline it is getting.

Sourcing

Every claim traces back to a primary source, and that source is linked at the bottom of the article so you can check it yourself.

  • I read the paper, not just the press release. Where an article summarizes coverage from another outlet, that outlet is cited too.
  • I do not publish a number I cannot trace to a source. If a study does not report something, I leave it out rather than estimate it.
  • I report absolute risk, not just relative risk. A treatment that cuts risk by 40 percent may move it from 2 in 1,000 to 1.2 in 1,000, and you deserve to see both figures.
  • I name the study design and its size, because a randomized trial of 20,000 people and an observational study of 200 do not carry the same weight.
  • I state the limitations the authors state, including funding sources and conflicts of interest where they are disclosed.

Masthead

The Dr Kumar Discovery is written and edited by Dr. Ravi Kumar, MD, a board-certified neurosurgeon and assistant professor of neurosurgery at the University of North Carolina. He earned his MD from Texas A&M University College of Medicine in 2010 and completed his neurosurgery residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, in 2017.

Every article is reviewed and fact-checked by Dr. Kumar before it is published. There is no anonymous byline on this site, and no article is published without a named physician accountable for it.

Use of AI tools

I use software, including AI tools, to help find relevant studies, pull figures out of papers, and draft summaries. I am telling you this because you should know how the sausage is made.

What that does not change: a board-certified physician reads the underlying paper, verifies the numbers against it, writes the medical judgment, and signs off before anything publishes. The accountability is human and it is named. No article reaches this site on the strength of a model’s output alone.

Corrections

I will get things wrong. When that happens I want it fixed quickly and visibly rather than quietly.

If you find an error, email [email protected] or use the contact form, and point me at the specific claim. Reports about a factual error get priority over everything else in the inbox.

Here is what happens next:

  • Factual errors are corrected as soon as I have verified the problem. The article carries an “Updated” date alongside its original publication date, so a corrected piece is visibly distinguishable from an untouched one.
  • Substantive corrections, meaning anything that changes what a reader would conclude or do, get a note at the point of the correction saying what was changed and when.
  • Minor fixes such as typos, broken links, or clarified wording are made without a note.
  • If a claim cannot be substantiated, the claim comes out. I would rather publish less than leave something standing that I cannot support.

The original publication date is never altered to disguise a correction.

Ownership and funding

The Dr Kumar Discovery is published by Kumar Media LLC, which is owned by Dr. Ravi Kumar. The site is independent and is not owned by, funded by, or editorially directed by any hospital, university, pharmaceutical company, supplement maker, device manufacturer, or medical association.

Revenue comes from the newsletter, podcast sponsorships, and site sponsorships. Sponsors have no input into editorial coverage, no advance notice of what will be published, and no ability to review or influence an article. Sponsored content, when it exists, is labeled as sponsored. Editorial coverage is never sold.

Any financial relationship that could reasonably bear on a topic is disclosed on the article itself. Current disclosures are listed on the disclaimer and disclosures page.

Ethics and independence

  • I do not accept payment, gifts, or consideration in exchange for coverage or for a particular conclusion.
  • I do not publish claims I would not be willing to defend to a colleague.
  • I distinguish between what the evidence shows and what I think, and I label the second one as opinion.
  • I am willing to write that the honest answer is that nobody knows yet, because that is frequently the honest answer.
  • I do not use coverage to promote a product I have a stake in without disclosing the stake.

What this site is not

The content here is for informational and educational purposes and is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Reading an article does not create a physician-patient relationship. Always talk to your own physician or qualified health provider about your situation, and never disregard or delay professional medical advice because of something you read here.
