CHA₂DS₂-VASc Calculator
CHA2DS2-VASc estimates yearly stroke risk for people with non-valvular atrial fibrillation and helps guide whether blood thinners are recommended. It is a decision aid, not a substitute for your physician.
| Result | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| 0 to 0 | Low risk |
| 1 to 1 | Intermediate risk |
| 2 and above | Elevated risk |

FAQs
What is the CHA₂DS₂-VASc score?
It is a validated score that estimates the yearly risk of stroke in people with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Points are assigned for congestive heart failure, hypertension, age, diabetes, prior stroke or clot, vascular disease, and sex, for a total of 0 to 9.
How is the score used to guide treatment?
In general, a score of 0 in men is low risk and does not call for blood thinners, a score of 1 is intermediate, and a score of 2 or more usually favors oral anticoagulation. A score of 1 arising from female sex alone is still treated as low risk. Your physician weighs this against your bleeding risk.
Does this replace my doctor’s judgment?
No. The score is a decision aid. The choice to start a blood thinner depends on your full history, your bleeding risk, and a conversation with your physician.
